World Language Standards

Content Standard 6: Students will acquire and use information from a variety of sources only available in the world language, using technology, print, audiovisual, media, data and human resources.
a.     use multimedia sources to expand their understanding of the target culture(s) and integrate it with their existing knowledge base
b.     develop the necessary skills to use the Internet/World Wide Web in order to gain greater access to the target culture(s)

There are 5 categories for the standards regarding Foreign Language, which are: Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons and Communities. I chose the standard under "Connections" which aligns with the use of technology in the classroom. The main idea in this standard is to expand the comprehension of the target language and culture using new and prior knowledge. Based on my own experience learning English as my third language, visuals placed an important role in my learning. I need to make the connection between words and pictures. Also, learning a language is kind of frustrating sometimes, so it is important to make it fun, relevant and interactive as much as possible. This standard reflects on the need of developing skills to use the Internet as a way to access and learn more about the target language and culture. Both the digital imagery and the Inspiration program can be used to practice the language and explore the culture. For example, students can make a web using Inspiration to define a certain country using categories such as music, art, food, people, sports, location, etc. They can also read a story about a cultural fact and do a digital imagery representing what they learned.
